Redundant / Concurrent Publication Policy
Global Virology Reports (GVR) publishes only original content. The submission of manuscripts that are under consideration elsewhere, or that constitute redundant or duplicate publication of previously disseminated work, is considered a serious breach of publishing ethics. This policy safeguards the integrity of the scholarly record and ensures that each published article makes a distinct contribution to the scientific literature.
Concurrent Submission (Duplicate Submission)
· Prohibition: Manuscripts must not be submitted to more than one journal for simultaneous consideration.
· Action: Concurrent submission is grounds for immediate rejection. The authors' institution(s) may also be notified.
Redundant (Duplicate) Publication
· Definition: Publishing a manuscript that substantially overlaps with one's own previously published work in any language without transparent cross-recitation and justification.
· "Salami Slicing": A specific form of redundant publication where a single study is inappropriately segmented into multiple smaller papers to increase publication count. This is unacceptable unless the division is ethically and scientifically justified (e.g., distinct hypotheses and datasets).
· Author Responsibility: Upon submission, authors must explicitly disclose any potentially overlapping manuscripts—whether published, in press, or under review—and provide copies of them to the handling editor.
Acceptable Forms of Secondary Publication
In certain limited circumstances, republication of material may be permissible, provided the following conditions are met:
· Justification: The republished work must serve a different audience or purpose (e.g., translation, publication in a different format for a specific community).
· Disclosure & Permission: The authors must receive explicit written permission from the copyright holder of the original publication (usually the publisher).
· Transparent Labeling: The secondary publication must be clearly labeled as such and must cite the original source in full.
Preprint Servers
· GVR considers the posting of a manuscript on a community-recognized preprint server (e.g., arXiv, bioRxiv) as prior dissemination but not as prior publication.
· Authors are required to declare the preprint upon submission and provide a link. The preprint may be considered during the review process.
Consequences
Violation of this policy, whether intentional or unintentional, will result in consequences that may include:
· Immediate rejection of the manuscript.
· Retraction of a published article.
· A ban on submissions from the authors for a defined period.
· Formal notification of the breach to the authors' institutional leadership.
